WORKSHOP: TEAM DEVELOPMENT

 OBJECTIVE OF THIS WORKSHOP

The objective of this workshop is to enable teams to improve their joint decision making and problem solving skills, especially when dealing with complex problems.

SUITABLE FOR: Senior supervisors, managers, technical and specialist staff involved in team decision making and problem solving.

THE CONTENT OF THE WORKSHOP

The team development workshop is based on both the introductory and  advanced decision making and problem solving courses – after all, that’s the main function of teams in organisations – to make decisions and solve problems. However, during this workshop more emphasis is placed on the principles of constructive relationships, emotional intelligence, trust, collaboration, cooperation and communication, all of which have been shown to be important for team effectiveness. The advantage of this form of team development is that all the members understand where they are in the process, they are ‘on the same page’ in discussions and it tends to break down any silo mentality that might exist.

Prior to the workshop the members of the team are asked to complete a diagnostic questionnaire, this is analysed and the facilitator meets with the team and senior management to discuss the responses to the questionnaire and what they want to achieve through the workshop.

DURATION

The duration is two sessions of four hours each, starting at 8.30 am to 12.30 with two 15 minute breaks per session.

METHOD OF FACILITATION

The workshop is highly interactive with a minimum amount of lecturing. It is  based mainly on discussions about practical real-life case studies with apprpriate feedback, advice and guidance from the facilitator.

WORKBOOK

A workbook is provided to participants at the start of each workshop and is based on the book, Sharpen your decision making and problem solving skills by Clive Hunter. For information on this book click here.

FACILITATOR

The facilitator is Dr Clive Hunter. (Certified as a facilitator and assessor with the ETDP SETA.) Click here for more information about him.

VENUE

APPLICATION

As with all kinds of skills, the more one practices them the better one gets so the skills should be applied in the work situation and evaluated on a regular basis.

Participants are also encouraged to network with each other about the problems they have and how they have tackled them.

FEE

The fee for the workshop is R1 300 per person. This includes preliminary discussions with the facilitator, both four-hour sessions, the workbook and tea/coffee during the breaks.

COURSEBUSINESS PRINCIPLES FOR SUPERVISORS

OBJECTIVE OF THIS COURSE

The objective of this course is to enable delegates to understand the basic principles of running a business and how they can apply them in their jobs and organisations.

SUITABLE FOR: Supervisors and any skilled workers who will benefit from an improved knowledge of business principles.

THE CONTENT OF THE COURSE

During this course groups of delegates run a simple business and learn business principles through practical experience. Each group appoints a 'manager', purchases materials and equipment and makes a number of paper aeroplanes in a specified time and according to a specified design and quality. The good quality products are purchased by the customer (the facilitator) at a set price. The poor quality products are rejected. The profit or loss is then calculated for each group. The amount of profit or loss will differ for each group and the reasons for the differences in outcomes are discussed and the delegates invariably identify where the ‘managers’ and ‘workers’ did well and poorly. This leads to establishing the key principles in running a business successfully and how these principles can be applied in practice by each delegate.

DURATION

The duration is four hours, starting at 8.30 am to 12.30 with two 15 minute breaks.

METHOD OF FACILITATION

The course is highly active and interactive with a minimum amount of lecturing. It is  based on the exercises and discussions with appropriate feedback, advice and guidance from the facilitator.

WORKBOOK

A workbook is provided to participants and they are encouraged to make notes as the course progresses.
